I know it happens to all of us at some point or another. That moment you realize you have turned into your mother. I think the first time around it totally freaks you out!!! Then it happens again and again and you just deal with it. And then one day you realize your mother is actually pretty awesome and does know everything so you are totally fine with it. Even when your husband starts referring to you in your mother's name. He may get a dirty look but you know you can't argue, as much as you'd like to. You pick your battles, right? So today I had a moment like this, only I realized that my mother had turned into her mother and I into my mother. The memory is so vividly clear. My Grandma used to take my mom, Aunt Meme (Merilee) and all us kids out to eat...a lot. (I blame my fast food habit on my grandmother.) It was Taco Time or Arctic Circle. Does any remember the Arctic Circle in Centerville? Three Words...Horse Saddle Seats. (I so wish I had a picture of them) I know tons of you know what I'm talking about. They were the best! But, there was only 4. Remember being the youngest/smallest/slowest/last one out of the car? To not get a saddle seat was like the walk of shame. You were the outcast, banished to sit with The Moms. Oh, how I loved those seats! {Sigh} Anyway, back to the point. My grandma would always pay. The moms would be chasing the kids and grandma would order for everyone and then pay before the moms could get to it. So we would all sit down and the bill throwing would begin. $20 bills being thrown at grandma and grandma throwing them back. Kids grabbing the bills, more than happy to solve the dilemma of who's taking the money. It always ended with someone winning (usually grandma) by shoving the money down the other persons shirt. Yes, in public. Down each others shirts. I know. This very situation came about today with Granny (my mom) and I. Sitting in Dairy Queen, she paid and I tried to pay her back. She wouldn't take it. I owed her some money for something, so I tried to pay her for that. ($200!!!) She wouldn't take it. In fact, she threw $200 at me in the middle of Dairy Queen! For the Love! Now I'm more than happy to let my mom pay for my lunch, but I do not like owing people money. Even if she tells me not to worry about it, I am going to pay her back! Grrrr! Mother! You are so frustrating! We went back and forth with the money throwing for a minute and I finally got her to take most of it. I'm sure there were some people watching and thinking we were completely nuts. And we are. But at least I didn't put it down her shirt! even though I may have wanted to ;) |
